Archaeological Project Examples

The Mann’s Site (33Le726): The Manns site (33Le726) is located on a terrace along the Ohio River and represents at least two distinct occupations. A Late Woodland Period (circa A.D. 1000) occupation is represented by objects in the plowzone and features that extend down below the plowed layer. A deeper, Late Archaic period (ca. 1000 B.C.) site was also found. Magnetic survey at the surface located numerous buried cooking pits and backhoe trenching uncovered the older, buried occupation layer.

Eddie Rickenbacker’s boyhood home: Excavations in the back yard of Eddie Rickenbacker’s boyhood home located numerous artifacts and features from the childhood of America’s Ace of Aces in World War I. The house is a National Historic Landmark and recently has been through a round of stabilization and historic preservation work to return it to the way it appeared when the Rickenbacker family first lived there.

33At982: Site 33At982 is a 6000-year-old settlement found in Athens County, Ohio as part of a bridge construction project. This important site contained intact features and a buried (i.e., subplowzone) refuse layer dating to about 4000 B.C. Numerous projectile points found during the project contribute significantly to our understanding of changing stone tool technology during this little-studied period in Ohio’s past.
